The challenge
How do you visually capture themes of diversity, dissimilarity, and social inclusion in a single book cover? The dissertation On Being Different: Exploring the Relationship Between Dissimilarity and Social Inclusion in the Workplace needed a cover that was clear, inviting, and visually engaging.

The gig
As the book cover designer, I created hand-drawn illustrations representing a diverse range of people you encounter in the workplace. Diversity and inclusion exist in all shapes and sizes, and it was important to showcase that not only on the cover but throughout the book.

Behind the scenes
I combined typography and hand-drawn illustrations to mirror the book's core message:

• Designed minimalistic, expressive character sketches representing diverse individuals for the front and back covers.

• Highlighted a single character in blue to symbolize "being different" while remaining connected to the collective.

• Selected typography with an intentionally irregular yet structured style that reflects the balance between individuality and unity in the workplace.

• Used a clean, neutral background to let the illustrations and typography stand out.

The impact
The cover effectively conveys the book's exploration of workplace diversity and the importance of embracing differences, making it both eye-catching and meaningful. It appeals beyond an academic audience and, in doing so, inspires a potential new readership.
